High Altitude Passes

Shin La (5500m) (also known as Lebong Pass)  This is a traditional crossing from the upper Darma valley at Bidang to the Kuthi Yankti at Jolingkong. When snow-covered the W side is a PD/PD+ climb. When dry this side is a steep scramble with considerable stonefall danger. The Jolingkong side is easy snow or scree with a short glacier section. The pass is the key passage on the Adi Kailash Yatra route but is found too taxing by many trekkers. The views on both flanks are exceptionally fine.

Nama Pass (5250m)  This gives a magnificent high-level crossing between Kuthi and Sela and has been occasionally used by local people. The distance is c15km with 1500m of height gain on the Kuthi side and 2700m on the Sela flank. The Kuthi flank is a beautiful valley walk succeeded by a long plod up the Nama Glacier amid wild scenery. The Sela approach climbs a path up the Mandab Nabi valley to Basu grazings, then cuts up the branch valley N to a decayed glacier snout and finally cuts back NE up boulders and snow fields to a 45° headwall of snow. With glacier retreat the route is becoming rougher and two full days should be allowed for the passage.

Chatem La (5650m)  This remote and technical col between Brammah Parbat and Cheepaydang offers passage between the Chatem and Rama Glaciers and thus a link from Kuthi to Bidang. The col has a prominent medial tower and is visible from below Kuthi village. The low-point is the right-hand saddle. A final 300m snow/ice couloir of 45-55° leads to the col. The pass was first reached by M Moran in 2006 (alpine AD). The Rama side drops in very steep loose rock gullies for 200m to the head of the Rama Glacier

Ralam Dhura Pass (strenuous - 5580m) - A passage in the Panchchuli Range between Chaudhara (6510m) and Sui Tilla (6373m), from the Lassar Yankti Valley to Gauri Ganga Valley.  From Pokhang (see above) in the Lassar Yankti, the route crosses two passes and negotiates three glaciers to reach Ralam village on the Ralam Gad, a tributary of the Gauri Ganga.  At pokhang (3430m) ascend alogside the Ralam Yangti stream steeply though thorny shrubs and scree, past Ramta Dangsu to Gunda Dangsu (4200m), 4.5km from Pokhang and on the left side of Nipchikang Glacier. Ascend steeply right of the glacier for 3.5km, then Tren left (SW) cross it and climb over snow/ice steps to Ralam Dhura (pass) Nipchikang Glacier is notorious for hidden crevasses and great care must be taken on the ascent to the pass.

On the other side descend steep snow on the Yankchar Glacier, after 5km on ice and snow, cross the glacier diagonally and climb steeply over the left enclosing ridge to reach Yankchar Dhura (4700m), exiting up a narrow, avalanche-prone gully between high rock walls.  Descend steeply NW to the Shyangalpa Glacier, and work NW along the left side of the glacier to Shangalpa camp ground (3750m), near the glacie snout. Continue down for 5km to Ralam Village (3400m) on the right bank of Ralam Gad. Gauri Ganga, on the main Munsiari-Milam Glacier route, Munsiari road head can be reached fro here in a day.
